What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors are doctors that deal primarily with the muscles & joints, nervous and skeletal system of the body. Chiropractic has been around for over 100 years and the education has evolved to be one of the most satisfying and hard earned degrees to achieve. A minimum of 6 years of university level education, over 4500 hours of classroom and clinical instruction is required to obtain their degree. Each Canadian-practicing chiropractor must pass national and provincial board exams, among the more difficult in the world. Over 3 million Canadian visit chiropractors every year. More and more are discovering how good they feel when they include chiropractic as part of their regular health care regime.

Chiropractic is often considered the last resort for some patients, when the traditional health approach hasn't fulfilled the patient's needs entirely. Initially, a complete history, full examination and full review of systems are taken. The more information provided to the doctor regarding history, lifestyle and any risk factors, the more accurate and effective your treatment will be.

Often times, where symptoms are present and where the cause of the pain actually manifests, are two different things. All of our chiropractors take a whole body, biomechanical approach to the body's function. They are certified in Active Release Techniques® and acupuncture, and their approach in evaluation & treatment is three fold.

First, after a complete history evaluation, a skeletal assessment is done to ensure each bone and joint are working at optimum capacity and function. Sometimes when a bone/joint complex is 'stuck' or not completing its full range of motion; pain, restriction & discomfort are felt, and other symptoms may be exhibited. If restrictions are found, several techniques can be used to restore function and motion. Specific directional pressure may be applied to the joint to mobilize it. Adjustments rarely hurt; and more often, you will have immediate pain relief and feel more relaxed.

Second, muscles are tested to ensure proper firing patterns of nerves and reflexes. The muscle system is complex and each muscle is evaluated to understand where the problem is originating from, and whether the cause is due to a nerve entrapment, restricted range of motion, scar tissue within the muscle & surrounding tissues or due to some other reason. Generally, Active Release Techniques® effectively and efficiently breaks up the scar tissue, releases the entrapment and restores function & motion to the muscle. ART® is excellent for all sorts of disorders; systemic, skeletal, nerve entrapments, acute or chronic injury or otherwise. Extensive training to individualize each muscle component (function, motion and treatment) is taken in order to isolate and resolve the actual problem.

Third, their knowledge of Chinese and Japanese acupuncture is utilized, to approach complex cases with an understanding of the body's energy flow and the blockages that may occur in the meridian channels. It is curious to discover that pain patterns often follow meridian channels and stimulating specific points will aid in the healing process.

All the techniques utilized by our chiropractors can be done individually, or in combination. Each treatment is specific for your needs and will be discussed and consent obtained, prior to any treatment. Our chiropractors believe in co-management of patients. Neither hesitates to refer patients to other specialists when it is appropriate and are very familiar with all the different approaches to health and can advise you on the best course of action for your health.
